The Thursday, 7/9, afternoon storms delivered a lightning shot near my house around 3:30pm. I haven't discovered any damage to radio gear yet and there's no evidence of actually hitting the house. I need to put an analyzer on my HF vertical to check it out but there's no external evidence of damage. It did get to the surge protector that powers my home entertainment and Internet network. The interesting thing is it only got to the outlets that have staged, switched power for those components. The unswitched outlets are still functioning so that seems weird. The vendor/installer for the home entertainment gear will come out Monday to replace the surge protector. It's expensive but not expensive like new electronic and network gear would have been.

I'm sorry to hear that. That storm cell was looking pretty nasty over their in your neighborhood. I hope everything comes out alright for you. 73....

That dies suck!. Hopefully everything is ok and the surge suppressors did there jobs. So weird how lightning works, can blow everything but one piece of equipment plugged into the SS. When a storm is coming, I try to unplug everything but sometimes there is no time. Good luck and hope everything turns out out for ya..

Thanks guys - this was my first personal experience but have read of plenty others. One thing that I'm going to get religious about is unplugging the ham and scanner gear when I'm away from it. This really shook my wife up - she said her hair was standing on end just before and she was in the house. This is why it surprises me that I've not found any other damage to the house or other things like appliances, etc.

PJ, I was at a client meeting so I wasn't even aware of how those storms moved into the area and strengthened to deliver so much rain, etc. I had to make a high water detour just to get into my neighborhood and, from my driveway, I could hear the normally-small/dry creek behind the house rushing with water runoff from the storm.
