top three books for a newbie

OK, next question for your scanning gurus who are quickly educating me...

I want to be sure I get the right books to start off with, so what I am looking for is input on 3 really good books for a newbie to digital scanning that will;

* explain all the acronyms clearly
* explain the technologies used now and proposed technologies coming soon
* explain techniques for programming and managing channels/sets, etc. on scanners like the Pro-96 or BC250D/BC246T
* discuss antenna technologies and where they are best used/what scenarios to use them in...
* a solid compendium of radio/scanning resources that will help a person learn more about scanning

HMMMM take all the info on this website, put it onto a format that is acceptable to most publishers, get Lindsay to got to the publisher and get the full copyright, and other fees, and print it... Bingo-the ultimate guide!

I am not sure if there are just 3 books that would do the job.

You'd need one for trunking in general, one for Motorola's formats, one for LTR formats, one for EDACS, as well as the published protocols for APCO P-25. Then look through all the multitude of info on scanners in general, and just the HUGE amount of info on this site on the digital scanners...... Learning just the basics takes time. There is no Fast way to get all the knowledge.

milf is right... get lindsay to publish a book

on a serious note... he's still right. there is so much info out there that books will be only little help. this site is constantly being updated, and as the bc246t owner's manual says...

Hi,

Go to Radioshack and pick up a copy of POLICE CALL (just ask someone that works there). They have a really good explanation of just about everything to know about scanning. It is also a very good frequency guide. Just make sure you pick up the right copy as they have it sold in regions (i think there are 3 regions)

Well I would say just read this site, but a lot of people use many acronyms and other terms incorrectly here.

Ask about the ones you need right away, and work up from there.

There are too many "Technologies" to list. The best thing to do is ask as you have questions.

I will leave this to a Scanner expert! :wink:

Get the ARRL book on Antennas and propagation. There is no substitue for a true understanding on this complex issue.

* a solid compendium of radio/scanning resources that will help a person learn more about scanning
