A frightening situation developed earlier Sunday evening when the West Ridge Mall experienced a bomb scare.
Cars filed out of Sears at the West Ridge Mall while the stormy weather outside intensified. Many uncertain of what they were experiencing.
Anthony Brown is an employee at Sears. He was working at the time of the evacuation.
"They made the announcement for everybody to evacuate the store. Apparently there was a box that was dropped off outside to one of our security guys and he opened it up and stuff, so he called the bomb squad and he helped them carry it out," Anthony Brown, Sears employee, said.
Initial reports suggested that the device appeared to be a pipe bomb, but Topeka police are still investigating.
"Police had found a suspicious device and taken it inside to the store, the store then evacuated the area for the police and the fire department, the bomb squad is examining the device," Kristi Pankratz, Topeka Police Public Information Officer, said.
There were no injuries reported but police urge individuals not to take action into their own hands if they see something unusual.
"We really want to encourage people if they see a suspicious looking device not to pick it up, just leave it there where it is and alert police," Pankratz said.
