Topeka, KS- Fire Station Alerting part of County Radio Upgrade

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Some local fire stations are getting a 15 million dollar upgrade. It will help reaction time to calls and help with stress levels. That upgrade comes in the form of new radio and alarm systems for 12 Topeka and five rural fire stations. While the radio will allow for more reliable communication, the new alarms are designed to minimize stress from the alarms.

Before someone asks why it cost $15 million to upgrade alerting to 17 stations, the news is quoting the overall cost of the radio system upgrade including a new Motorola 15 channel, 5 site P-25 trunking system, a 7 site multicasting paging system, 911 center upgrades, station alerting and new APX subscriber units for public safety countywide.

The existing station alerting was by tone & voice alone for the 5 "rural" manned stations and through a homemade hybrid system for the 12 Topeka FD stations.

I didn't mean you, I thought the article should have had it since that seemed to be their focus.

If it's like what they use where I live now (which I think was the plan) there is nothing heard over the radio. The dispatcher will do a broadcast but the call info is sent over the data stream
