Good info, but allow for my OCD:

1) There is no such thing as a tornado not on the ground ')

2)

Started around 10:30 PM EST.

TN uses Daylight Saving Time, so that'd be 1030pm EDT I think.

Way back I remember it was called a funnel cloud if it wasn't touching the ground, then when it was on the ground called a tornado. Just curious what is it called now or what is the proper terminology?

I don't hear the weather people refer to funnel clouds anymore now everything is a tornado whether it's touching down or not .. such as "Doppler indicated tornado"... some will say Doppler indicated rotation but not many.

Hello, it is not a Tornado until it starts stiring up debrie, and dust (On Ground), before that it is a Funnel Cloud only. Also before a Funnel Cloud forms most of the time a Wall Cloud will form that will be Rotating,
A wall cloud is defined as a wall shaped lowering of the cloud base/ceiling.

Also a tornado CAN NOT BE indicated by duppler radar, ONLY ROTATION.

I have been a trained advanced storm spotter thourgh the skywarn program by the National Weather Service in Nashville (Mid TN Office) for 7 years, I have seen, and reported 3 tornados in my time.

So it's still the same as I grew up with. It's just the some of the weather people now call everything a tornado whether it's on the ground or not.

That always gets me when they say Doppler indicated tornado. Our local weatherman correctly calls it rotation. I think they are trying to get people to take seriously that a funnel cloud or rotation could produce a tornado at anytime, otherwise people ignore it. Not to mention tornado sounds more menacing than rotation.

Not completely true... If the tornado passes very close to the radar, as happened in Little Rock and Jackson MS last year, it can be seen on the doppler radar. Also the new dual-polarity system being deployed (now in two OK sites) can pick up the debris field lifted by a tornado.
