I purchased a "NASCAR" type headset on e-Bay that I plan to use for general vhf monitoring. It is a nice headset in that it blocks out external noise, has volume controls on each earpiece, was a great price, etc. Problem is it has a warning label telling me to wash my hands after use because of lead content in the materials used. (I am wearing this thing on my head but it is telling me to wash my hands) Is this a real hazard or just a "cover your butt" ploy by the manufacturer.

I don't know, but I know I've always seen the same message on Christmas lights. I don't think it's that big of a hazard but I would like to see what its all about. For all I know it could be the same as those messages on plastic bags that say not to line cribs with them, or if it's a foreign, unknown brand it may very well have large amounts of lead in it.

Without knowing any details, I would guess it is all CYA. The solder is not guaranteed lead free.
Please don't take it apart & then lick your fingers.

To MrRevesz's point, please don't take it apart & leave it near small children.

I guess it begs the question, is the same hazard in all (most?) head sets, are there non-toxics ones on the market and how does one know?

I agree, chances are there might be a part inside the unit that could contain lead, even on the smallest of scales. This way if someone does take it apart, touch it and then eat a hamburger, when they become ill the company isn't held responsible. Either way I wouldn't worry.

i've seen those in about all of the plastic wires in just about anything.
I will even suck on the plastic wires sometimes like a string, i'm not screwed up yet.
i think its just for something as if your going to cut it or suck the metal ends,

but far from dining on your favorite lead fishing sinker

Lead poisoning (or other heavy metals) is far more serious in infants and children as developing nerve cells are most sensitive to the damaging toxin. Adults don't grow brain cells as rapidly (or at all, depending on the prevailing research of the day) and it takes a pretty hefty dose for measureable effects.

Personally, though, I do make it a point to wash my hands after soldering. And I'm a fast & loose kinda guy with the safety stuff.

I'd stop using them if I were you, if it's so toxic you have to wash your hands after touching them, then you don't need them on your head!

Are you in the habit of handling food without washing your hands? If not, you have nothing to worry about. Even if you do, you're worrying about nothing. It's not like you're moving significant quantities of lead into your body. Unless you plan on chewing and sucking on them, relax.

Lead based paint.
Lead in ga$, and using that gas to wash my hands.
Asbestos insulation on the water pipes in school.
Asbestos floor and ceiling tile in school.
The joy of being chosen to take the chalk board erasers outside to clean them by beating them together.

In the City of Detroit, Michigan, and probably many other old cities, the water main from the street to the house was made of lead.

Same here, w/ the Xmas lights.

But as the label says: it contains substances known to cause cancer in the state of California. So as long as I don't move there, I'm OK.

and the new 'energy efficient' florescent light bulbs contain mercury. I remember playing with mercury as a kid, a liquid metal.

soo much mold seeping in through the walls and floor
they told us to keep the windows open
after new ceiling, ALL THE SINUS INFECTIONS cleared up!!! from the teachers and students

i read the article about the mercury in the new energy efficient bulbs

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'till I'm sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me.

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

I can't think of anything to say except...
I think it's marvelous! Ha Ha Ha!
