What are you suggesting?

Not much difference between that and an American SUV in the way of cost, and carries Japanese reputation for reliability along with it.

I'm suggesting it was a crappy thing to do to use public funds to purchase a Japanese vehicle, which by the way has no more reliability than American products today. I have never seen a foreign-made vehicle used by a public safey agency until that 2006-vintage article, but then I don't go looking for them either.

Well...

I have to agree with crazyboy... it's too cramped. For the cost of a 4-Runner, I feel they would have been better off with a Expedition, Suburban or maybe a pick-up truck with a bed cover. I'm also not a fan of foreign emergency vehicles...

I don't like it because of the fact it is cramped, but a 4Runner costs almost the same base price as an explorer, which is comparable size, but I do understand why people prefer American cars to be emergency vehicles.

Oh and as long as explorers are nicknames "exploders" I don't think that it is a contest of reliability.. just check the recall history of both cars to see what kind of time and effort goes into the design and build of cars.

I am a Chevy man at heart but I will tell you that Toyota makes on of the best vehicles out there as far as reliability. When Ford is now advertising now with quality equal to Toyota that tells you something. If you are happy with saying you are equal to something then it must be really good.

After owning and driving a Land Cruiser 120, which has the same platform as the 4Runner, I can see why they picked it.

Far better built and more reliable than an Exploder (we had a 99 Sport, piece of junk)

Same here, had a 99 Exploder XLT and traded it in after 6 years for fear it would shake itself to death. What a piece of junk is right.

And traded it for a '05 4Runner Sport Edition with the V8 - LOADS of power and rock solid. No comparison whatsoever!

Our local (Indiana...not Japan) factory made Toyota Tundras and Sequoias. Manufactured here, built here...in America. There are plenty of Emergency Response Vehicles for Law Enforcement, Fire Departments and EMS in our county and other surrounding counties. Many of them were donated to local emergency services by Toyota. They are very tough, smooth riding, powerful and reliable. They work well for the service they are used in.
