Toyota 4runner Scanner Install

So, a few months ago, I tried to wire up my Uniden BCT15X scanner in my 4runner. I was told that I should wire it to the accessory port on the fuse block. So, I did, and went away for a minute, came back with smoke pouring out of my dash. Unbolted the dash as quickly as I could, after yanking the scanner wires out of the fuse block, and sure enough it was the scanner burning up. It didn't do enough damage to fry it, but put out a good amount of smoke. So, after that, I haven't touched the fuse block. I ran the cigarette lighter plug behind the dash, and just ran it by that method. My questions are, #1, why exactly did it start smoking?, and #2, is there any way to convert the cigarette lighter to be an always on source? It will be on a switch if I do convert, but I'd like the radio to be always on, even outside of the car. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any help.

Hi,

Well, in this setup, you could have just piggybacked on to the power for your stereo!! TOO easy!! Scanners draw very little and chances are the stereo will be off or very low while the scanner is on so plenty of juice for both using Toyota's reasonable wiring.
