Hello!
TR-9 is an open-source handheld transceiver. It works on 420..450MHz band. You can use it for both analog FM and M17. DMR should also be possible, but the voice coder is proprietary. Have fun building it.

Since when? Motorola has some proprietary features for it's MotoTRBO radios, but DMR itself is definitely not. That's why it's so popular and the radios are so cheap.

The vocoder used for DMR has been proprietary since the beginning of DMR. The vocoder used in DMR is the AMBE+2 (hardware- or software-based), is from DVSI and has to be purchased or licensed from them. For example, companies such as NW DIgital Radio purchase the vocoder ICs from DVSI and build their vocoder dongles using these DVSI ICs. Some companies will license the software from DVSI and implement the AMBE+2 vocoder in their own hardware.

A project that can actually get some proper software support! Maybe it's time to get my codec2 speech recognition training project back online...


I'm still sad about MD380tools falling apart. Apparently one of the primary developers went SK, which I only learned about recently. :(

You can probably grab a bunch of that md380tools code and use it for a jump start on some nice features, but you'll have to buy Travis 2 liters of IPA last I checked.

I hear there's a reasonably slick maidenhead grid square implementation that needs a good home :D, but I also know md380tools was very popular for vision-impaired hams - morse code readouts of menus and settings made it much friendlier than any typical handheld.

I'm extremely excited, and I'm probably going to sell most of my DMR radios to fund buying these when they are ready for beta testing.

The patents for the AMBE used in DMR were filed in the early 2000's. All but one are expired. And the true shame is that one was also filed in the early 2000's but granted tardily (issued in 2013) by the patent office, so its in effect till about 2028.

There is speculation that many of the Chinese DMR radios are using bootleg/unlicensed AMBE code from Indusic.

Aside from the propriety AMBE+2 vocoder licensed by DVSI, Motorola also has a DMR Essentials Licensing program that covers some of the Motorola patents they claim are related to the DMR standard. Uniden is listed as a licensee. Whistler is not.

In case you have missed it: this radio is capable of analog FM, M17, DMR, D-Star, P25, NXDN, maybe even YSF.

Cool, but please pinch me when some small manufacture offers this at the very least in some sort of kit form.

Most hams have problems just trying to put on a connector.
