Hello,

I have a quick question and hope someone here can give me an answer. I have purchased a Tram 1199 antenna for installation on my truck. Due to height concerns, I am unable to mount the antenna where I originally planned. I am looking for a way to do a hood lip mount with this antenna now and was wondering if I unscrew the antenna from the window mount, would it be compatible with a NMO mount? If not does anyone have any ideas on how to convert this glass mount antenna to a hood mount?

Thanks

Glass mount antennas are (generally) garbage. You're better off returning it and/or tossing it in the garbage.

Agree. Antennas with little or no ground are poor. You are better off buying a rubber duck.

Correct me if I am wrong, but glass mount antennas are usually considered to be poor quality because of signal degradation through the glass, my question is using just the antenna, not the glass mount, and attaching it to a NMO mount. So my original question was would just the antenna portion of this antenna be compatible with the NMO mount?

From the look of it, I doubt it would fit a NMO but it might replace the whip on your AM/FM antenna if it is fender mounted

I moved my 1199 when I replaced my Ford with an Altima. I was too lazy to take the glass mounts off, so I snipped the Tram at it's base, and put it into an old scanner trunk lip mount antenna I found in the garage. Works just as the 1199 did on my Focus - excellently. I have zero interest in transmitting, and can only speak to how it works for me, in Southern California.

But don't let my real world example deter you from the fine advice given in these forums...

You say you snipped it at the base? With the antenna I have, I shouldnt have to snip it, it is threaded and could be screwed off the base. Would the thread size be the same as a NMO trunk lip mount?

Thread/NMO

By eyeballing that, I can tell you with reasonable certainty that if you unscrew it from the base
it would not fit an NMO mount. NMO mount bases are considerably wider than that on the Tram.

If you had some type of mag mount or something made by tram the whip might possibly fit.

Why not just buy one? They're not that expensive.
