No, I have not suffered serious bodily injury. What I have done is join together with a number of other radio enthusiasts in the Pittsburgh area to share knowledge of and enjoyment in monitoring the RF spectrum.
A few years ago I started a weekly net on the local 147.090 repeater to discuss the hobby of scanning. I have been listening to public safety radio since before the public became aware of the word “Bearcat” and have always found it to be an enjoyable hobby.
Much to my surprise the scanner net was received far better than I expected. Even more interesting was the discovery that the number of people checking into the net was very small compared to the number of those out there “just listening”. I would go to a ham fest and people that I had never talked to on the air would approach me and tell me that they listen in on the scanner net every week.
Even more surprising is the number of people who tell me that they are not even licensed they are just listening in because they are interested in the topic. One of my objectives in doing the net is to entice avid scanner listeners to get their amateur radio license and join the fraternity of operators. I'm happy to say that a few have done exactly that.
After the net had been in operation for a while we decided it would be good to get together over a cup of coffee and carry on the discussion in person. So some of us started gathering at a local Kings restaurant for what became know at “meetings of the oblong table”. After several of these meetings the question arose of where do we go from here? It seemed like the next logical step was to form a club. And that is what we have done.
It was decided that it could not be just a “scanner club” as we wanted to include people whose interests went beyond scanning. There are many short wave listeners out there along with television and broad cast band enthusiasts. So we went for “the big tent” option and invited everyone in.
Much as with the scanner net things are progressing slowly. We talked a lot about what we would do over the summer and with the onset of fall and now winter we have managed to have two meetings. One of the first things I wanted to do was pick out a name for the group and that we have done.

If you are interested in monitoring the RF spectrum we would like you to join us. Our next meeting will be on Saturday January 8th at 09:00 AM. If you would like additional information please drop me a note in email. Thanks. I have neglected my account here on the Radio Refference page for a while now and will try to stay more active in the new year.
I hope you all have had a blessed Christmas and are looking forward to happy monitoring in the new year.
