I have NEVER heard a manifest discussed over the radio.
Didnt mean that this was discussed over the radio , I just meant that the rail road has bigger issues that an occasional hitch hiker .
Another documentary video . They steal from the trains while they are moving . interesting watch .

Is that the documentary where a young hood had interest in trains then got older stole a cab radio and set it up in his urban housing apartments by a rail yard and learned the lingo and figured out which trains came in with hot loads?

And there went the intelligent part of this discussion. How do you think an app gets its audio? From a person streaming it from a scanner or radio. There is no feed for every mile of track out there much less pd etc.

oh don't you worry in between trying to keep from freezing to death, starving to death, death by (fill in the blank) and all the other pleasantries of homelessness, you can bet the homeless are busting their tails working on a technological marvel to get full radio spectrum dominance thus being able to take all the free train rides the rest of us could only dream of taking.

using the 2G Internet on their free "Obama Phones"

Come on people. Even the Mastermind show wasn't a homeless guy. Quit falling into the soundbite traps.

There are some pros that do this. And the most famous hobo vlogger: Stobie the Hobo though he never uses radios or scanners.

And Mr. Stobie was killed by an Amtrak train, while trespassing.

Also, while most RR L.E. is encrypted, the Road channels / yard channels / interchange channels won't be. There are too many safety risks when using encryption, and AAR has already stated this as well.

NXDN is coming to class 1's, though. It's already in place, just ready to swap over in a lot of places.

Folks hopping trains remind me of the old movie "Emperor of the North" 1973 with Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine as the sadistic rail-man using hammers on chains to kill hobos's laying underneath the cars. You hop a train? look out for the hammers.
