To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just finished programming the VX-2200 radio, the radio receives fine but will not transmit. When you press the PT on the mike the radio shows "Self Test" and doesn't transmit. Any ideas as to why this is?

Your power source is not supplying enough current, or the voltage drop when you TX is too much.

how are you powering your radio? Please describe your setup.

Bigger power supply (amps) will not help if the DC power cable used is the same and has a high resistance point.

Since the commenters here don't know how radios work, I'll explain.

Radio
Power supply
Antenna

Basic setup folks

On another note the radio transmits on the factory frequencies 469.500 MHz but when programmed to 447.0625 MHz it will not transmit.
The spec on the radio it should work from 403 MHz- 470 MHz.

I think the two of us that responded know plenty about how radios work and how to troubleshoot them. If you take your car to the mechanic do you just tell him it's not running right and leave the keys and walk away.

Now that we know it transmits on at least one frequency that takes the antenna out of the setup or at least moves it to the bottom of the list. Which was not in the original post (no transmit) and is important to prioritize suggestions. The smallest detail is important.

Power supply connection/cable is still a possibility as the factory frequency could be done at a lower power level than your programmed frequency. With a poor power connection low power setting might work and higher setting drop the voltage below operation specification and when that happens... well anything could result.

Then maybe the programming of the 447.0625 might have been done incorrectly, but usually you are protected from corrupting the code plug and writing bad data.

Simple three block setup. 100 items have to be correct in each one and one bad setting/configuration/item in any one of them can keep you off the air.

Good Luck!
