• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm in the process of upgrading some HT1250's and CDM's that our volunteer dept uses for rural fire paging and comm's. I need to be able to page out our dept via Quik Call 2 (with voice) after the radios alert to the A-B tones that we use to alert all of our volunteers. I think I have this correct but I'm not positive. I have set up my HT1250 to signal with our A-B tones under the selective call tab. The page goes out and alerts just as it should. The receiving radios alert after the tones. The problem is the following voice transmission. I think I understand this to work as follows... Once I key up the PTT button and the A-B tones go out, I then have to go back to our main fire frequency in order to transmit any voice. Is this correct? I can't see any way to use the selective call mode for anything other than the sending of the A-B tones. If I keep the PTT button keyed, I hear nothing on the alerted radios as I attempt to transmit voice other than a carrier with no voice. I apologize if this has been posted elsewhere. I've read many posts but I'm not certain if I'm setting up the system correctly.

Thanks for the help.

This should help:

QUIK CALL II DECODING

Signaling ► Quik-Call II System ► Add or create a QCII system

Basic Tab: Call Format should match the tones of your system

Call Alert/Sel Call Tab ► Call Alert Type: Call Alert w/Voice

Call Alert/Sel Call Tab ► Call Alert LED: Optional

Call Alert/Sel Call Tab ► Alert Tone Auto Reset: Unchecked

Call Alert/Sel Call Tab ► Call Alert LED:

Auto Reset Timer Type to be Auto w/Carrier Override

Individual ID Tones Tab ► Enter your desired tones

Signaling ► Signaling Configuration ► Call Tone Tag Tab ► Sel Call Tone Tag – Here you can optionallychange the alert tone that the radio sounds when a Selective Call is received.

Signaling ► Signaling Configuration ► Call Tone Tag Tab ► To be Disabled

Conventional Personality ► Select the personality for QCII ► Signaling Tab ► RX Signaling – use dropdown to select the desired QCII system

For Signaling Squelch choose "And" for the radio to always be silent unless an alert is received matching the QCII setup.

For Signaling Squelch choose "Or" for the radio to monitor all radio traffic and alert when a call is received matching the QCII setup.

Controls & Menus ► Programmable Buttons ► Besure to define one of the programmable buttons short press to be Monitor. Pressing Monitor after an alert will return the radio to silent alert mode just like the reset button on a pager.

NOTE: If you want to use the radio like a pager (silent until alerted), create an additional Rx only personality for your QC-II, use the "AND" squelch. Plan to jump to your regular channel to transmit and/or receive. Do not include this channel on your scan lists and don’t set it up to scan or auto scan as scan will interfere with the radio hearing and decoding the tones.

To add to what @SteveC0625 said, if you're sending tones from a subscriber unit, you'll probably also have to hold down the PTT button while the tones are going out from the radio and then make your voice announcement without releasing the button. Otherwise, if you release the PTT the tones will get sent again the next time you push it (I found that out the hard way once).

I did discover that releasing the PTT button and then pressing again would send the tones a second time. I still cannot transmit voice after the tones have been sent. If I keep the PTT depressed and attempt to send voice, I hear nothing on the receiving radio. That's what I"m still confused about. I have everything set according to Steve's instructions above but still no voice.

Well, problem solved. I am not transmitting audio on the HT1550XLS on any freq! I had not used this radio for a long time and now discover it to be bad. Possibly a mic setting but I'll have to look into it. It's transmitting a good carrier but no voice.

Torn ribbon at internal mic. Not terribly happy with this at all. I'm certain that any replacement front housing will be crazy expensive. It doesn't appear to be something that can be replaced easily. I assume the mic is not available nor is it easy to replace.

What about using an external mic?

That's exactly what I'm going to use. I have a generic external mic and it works. Sound is awful but it does work. I'll look for a good microphone so that I can still use this radio. I'm not very good with external mics though. I worked for 32 years as a firefighter and I can't tell you how many times I used mine as a slinky. We used the ruggedized lime green mics from Motorola. They will take a beating!
