I know I have seen a list but I can't recall where. They are around 172MHz and are ASTRO unencrypted.

Here in DFW they use 172.900 P25 at Love Field, which the
PRO-96 decodes very well. So far, I have not heard
anything from DFW Int'l.

The following is the channel plan from the radios and the descriptions from list on the front of the radios. As you can see some of the channels have the same frequencies (i.e. 1 thru 4) , BUT they are apparently using digital conventional talkgroups as the channels do not hear each other (i.e. TX on Channel 3 is not heard on Channel 4, etc), the exception to this is Channel 10 which can be heard on Channel 7.

1 - 172.150 = S1 simplex [digital]
2 - 172.150 = S1 simplex [digital]
3 - 172.150 = S1 simplex [digital]
4 - 172.150 = S1 simplex [digital]
5 - 172.900 = S2 simplex [digital]

How does digital make a difference in the channel assiginments? I'd really like to grasp this concept. The second question is if I have a bc296D does setting the two primary freq's make a difference like setting up other channels in normal conventional mode or would I just need the two primarys.

I was wondering that myself. I could only come up with the possibility that since the post came from someone with a TSA radio, they were using encryption (not P-25) and the difference is in the encryption key used for the different channels. After all, a P-25 signal on one channel is going to be the same as a P-25 signal on another channel - that's the entire basis for P-25 in the first place.

They may have recently switched from encryption to P-25 and changed the channel order to something like this:

1 - 172.150 = S1 simplex [digital]
2 - 172.900 = S2 simplex [digital]
3 - 169.300 = S3 simplex [digital]
4 - 172.900 = R1 repeater (169.300 input) [digital]
5 - 166.4625 = F1 simplex with 103.5 CTCSS [analog]
6 - 166.4625 = F1 simplex [digital]


Keep in mind, the above list is just speculation. They may have kept the same channel list and now channels 1-4 are all the same. They may have also only went to P-25 on some channels - as posted by others above.

In any case, the only channels you need to program in a P-25 scanner are the six I listed above (and even then, excluding channel 4). There is no need to program frequencies in multiple times (except channes '5' and '6' in my list - you can program just '6' without CTCSS if you want to hear both, or program 166.4625 in again with 103.5 CTCSS).

So units like the PRO-96 simply ignore the NACs and convert the rest of the signal to audio?

If so, what is the use of P-25 if there are 4000+ NACs you have to have programmed in the radio along with the P-25 mode, and you have to have the correct NAC programmed in to talk to someone else?

It seems the NACs defeat interoperability if they work as you say they do.

What mode are these? Mot Type II, APOC-25? I have a BC296D.

It seems the NACs defeat interoperability if they work as you say they do.

They would defeat interoperability the same way programming CTCSS TX/RX into an analog radio and trying to talk to a radio with carrier squelch. While the carrier squelched radio could hear the TX/RX tone radio, the TX/RX tone radio could not hear the carrier squelched non-tone radio.

The following borrowed from the help on my RSS 8.5 for ASTRO portables (buried a handful of menus down):

F4-Change/View
F6-Conventional Systems
F3-Conventional Personalities
F9-More Options
(when a TX/RX voice/signal type = ASTRO)
F6-ASTRO Options

"RX Unmute Rule" option:
- Normal Squelch - The radio will unmute upon decoding a Network ID match.
- Selective Squelch - The radio will unmute upon decoding a Network ID match and either a Talkgroup ID match or a Selective Call.
- Data And Squelch - The radio will unmute upon decoding a Network ID match and a Selective Call.
- Digital CSQ - The radio will unmute to all Digital CAI Operation compliant voice signals.

So "Digital CSQ" is like carrier squelch on analog radios.

Then there are options for setting the actual RX Network ID and TX Network ID from 0 to FFF.

Help for those goes on to explain "feature is analogous to the Private-Line (PL) and Digital Private-Line (DPL) features which exist in analog radios."

So, it's like putting PL (or DPL) on 155.475. Making a national emergency channel your own private channel. Brilliant. :roll:

Almost as much fun as those who use encryption on 155.475 - making the people using it legitimately lock it out of their scan lists. (which, of course, defeats the purpose for having that channel in the first place)

I didn't think of looking in the RSS/CPS help files. I've never (yet) had to deal with digital, but all that is changing within the next few months.

Not only is there a NAC code but you can also create virtual talkgroups.

It's all on the same freq, just additional bits of info.

IAH TSA

Went out to the Houston Intercontinental airport today with my PRO96 and tried all of the above frequencies. Spent a couple hours within a mile of the terminal, and even drove around the pickup and dropoff areas.

Nothing! I had two receivers going, one analog only, expecting to hear the digital APCO25 sounds on it and voice on my PRO96.

Either they don't talk much on those frequencies, or they are using a different mode of communication, such as IWN (Integrated Wireless Network)? Or they are on a 800 or 900 mhz trunking system. Hmmmm....

At IAH, the signal strength I've seen on the TSA freqs suggests they have not been using a repeater, at least in the past. They are not very active frequencies and from what I understand they are nothing but boring routine traffic. I've heard digital audio on 169.3 and 172.15 at IAH.

listening to baby monitors is more interesting than listening to the TSA. Only thing I ever hear is them asking for calls on the phone, or shuffling screeners amongst checkpoints.
