I will be traveling with my scanner this week; and I was wondering will it damage the scanner if I allow it to go though the X-ray machine, at the airport? Will it wrap out any memory?

i have travelled a lot with scanners including last march to the bahamas and have never had any problems with any programming. i've never been stopped by security after running a carry on bag with my scanner in it through the xray machine

Thanks, for the information. It looks like I am going to be doing a lot of traveling for business and it would be nice not to have a hassle with TSA about my scanner.

I recommend removing the batteries from the scanner before going thru security. I had a major problem with a security at a airport one time. Security thought it was a 2 way radio, despite all my attempts to explain other wise. Finally after long phone calls and discussion, they confiscated the batteries and let me board my flight.
Had no problems with the xray machines though. Scanner and memory made it just fine.

What idiots.

Two way radios ARE allowed on planes, the USE of two-way (or even receivers) is what is prohibited.

Unfortunately, they seem to have a rule that once they say something they are NOT allowed to go back and change it. (cuts down on arguments).

Well, I just got back form my 1st of many trips to come. I had no problem traveling with my scanner and 2 meter handheld. TSA scanned my carry on and once they detacted my radio equipment they pulled it out and swiped it down. It may have taken an extra 5 min, but under today security situations what is an additional 5 min. Now, I am going to have to fiqure out the best way to travel with all my radios, I want to include my HF because it would be nice to work HF out of my hotel room. I love this hobby (way of life), because once the bug bits it really never goes away.

Re: traveling

I just went on a cruise out of Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, and I brought my scanner along. I'd been reading on here about all the hassle people have had, so I detached the antenna and pulled the batteries. I made it through the whole trip without any problems, even taking it on and off the ship in Key West in my camera bag. None of the security people (TSA, Royal Caribbean, Broward or Monroe sheriff's offices, etc.) opened the bag, or even said anything about it.
