A large working wildland fire started this afternoon near Holbrook Junction in southern Douglas County. Local media is reporting 3,500 acres with 7 structures lost. A Type II incident management team has been ordered and will take over the fire at 1600 tomorrow. The fire is now moving away from the Topaz Ranch Estates (TRE) area where the structures were destroyed and the fire started. Official release points to a controlled burn conducted yesterday by a TRE resident and was improperly extinguished. The wind in Mono County this afternoon was substantial as I drove home from Bishop. The fire is under the jurisdiction of the BLM's Carson City District.

InciWeb the Incident Information System: Tre Fire

Latest InciWeb information states 2 residences and 17 outbuildings burned shortly after the fire started.

Is there any regulation of controlled burning in Nevada? Is a permit required and no burn days announced? The resident obviously did not know how to put a fire out, which requires some mop up experience. Burning yesterday with the predictions of high winds was not well thought out. When I worked on the Bridgeport Ranger District of the Toiyabe NF the residents of TRE were a challenge to deal with. They had some interesting ideas about land management, most based on rumor and anecdotal information, mixed with a strong dislike of the federal government.

The only scanner feed I found is for Douglas County and their S.O. traffic must be on a different frequency than that the feed monitors. Too bad someone does not have a feed with USFS, BLM and NDF frequencies. A lot of action (unfortunately in the case of residential development) occurs on the Sierra Front. The Pinenut Mountains continue to burn because of human starts. I drove past them and TRE last week and saw how much has burned and what hasn't yet.
