Water Main Break Kills Worker, Closes University

(CBS4) CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. University Hill Blvd. was expected to be closed between Hampden and Belleview in Cherry Hills Village until at least early Friday afternoon after a water main accident that killed a worker for Denver Water late Thursday night. The water main break created a large hole under the road that had to be repaired.

A three person crew was working in a trench on University near the Cherry Hills Country Club at about 11 p.m. Thursday when South Metro Fire Rescue was called to help. Firefighters said the victim was injured and being supported by his co-workers to keep his head out of the water.

Firefighters, police and the Denver Water workers got a life vest on the victim and pulled him out of the trench. The force of the water coming out of the broken water line made the rescue more difficult, according to authorities.

The injured Denver Water worker was taken to Swedish hospital. He was later pronounced dead. The exact cause was not known.

Engineers were called to inspect the road and lead the repair effort. The hole caused by the water main break was estimated at 24 by 24 feet and 8 feet deep.

Parents of students who attend Cherry Hills Elementary and St. Mary's Academy were being asked to use Quincy to get their children to school.

Not that it means much to anyone. But it is well worth the headache in traffic to watch the Cherry Hills officers make the rich people turn around and go though the other entrance to Chery Hills Farms.
