I put the Boston Fire Dispatch freq., 453.65, into a scanner for an upcoming trip and I hear what sounds like an MDT data stream. Is that what it is?

Its not an MDT, but rather the data for the TransitTracker!

You're both right. There are three data channels in use with the current 450mhz system. Each vehicle is polled in some sequence or other to retrieve outgoing messages from the bus (requests to talk, emergency, silent alarms, gps location data, canned messages) and transmit data back to the bus (acknowledgments, text messages, voice activations, etc).

Currently wideband (the syntors and spectras on the buses can't be narrowbanded) and due to be replaced when the 700mhz system has been fully tested, accepted, and turned over.
