• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If "said" person is running a couple hundred watts or more, wouldn't cutting his coax damage is radio if he keys up?

I've always heard not to transmit without an antenna attached...?
True, but most of these clowns won't continue if they can't HEAR anyone complaining! 73, n9zas

I met one! The guy had a Chevy van filled with radios, liners and batteries. I think he had multiple alternators as well!

Hmm... so tell me, what did he do with a liner? Just because someone has gained a lot of equipment that doesn't always mean they know how to operate it, or the the theory involved in its operation. If all that was in a van for cb only, then that tells me probably not. 73, n9zas

Although this is credited to Albert Einstein, there is some controversy over whether he said it or anything like it. But it still fits.

"The wireless telegraph is not difficult to understand. The ordinary telegraph is like a very long cat. You pull the tail in New York, and it meows in Los Angeles. The wireless is the same, only without the cat." - Albert Einstein

What more do you need to know?

Very true, but did we not have to all pass our tests to become amateurs? A certain degree of knowledge is required to obtain any amateur radio license, but no knowledge is necessary for cb. 73, n9zas

Actually, all that is really necessary today is the ability to memorize! I've spoken to a few new hams who bragged about how they had memorized the entire test, but didn't really have much of a clue as to what anything meant!!

You just need to amend that to say "A certain degree of temporary knowledge....".

Even if you were diligent and tried to understand all of the material behind the questions on the test, there is no requirement to keep that knowledge, after the test. Some lose it faster than others.

There is an elderly ham near me with serious memory issues. He always forgets names and call signs, and sometimes says that after he keys the mike ,he often totally forgets what he was going to say!

Well, we're all only human. However when it comes to comms, your average everyday ham over 30 has my vote. 73, n9zas

If so, I bet he wondered why his hands tingled while in touch with the steering wheel, and why he has/had a list of medical issues.

Since this thread has totally derailed from the OP's original question, there's not much point in keeping it open.
