Trip along I-70

In two weeks I'll be driving through Colorado along I-70 and I was wondering what suggestions you might have on things for me to listen to. I have a Pro-96. Thank you for all of your help.

Well, you can hear all kinds of stuff on the DTRS from state patrol on your way in. As you get close to Denver, you can listen to aircraft at DIA and possibly Buckley AFB. When you into the metro area you can listen to Denver and all its surrounding cities. In the mountains there are the ski resorts.

Basically, the only things you can't listen to are Aurora public safety and one of the ambulance companies in Denver (LTR). Happy scanning.

Thanks for your reply! How would you suggest programming in the frequencies for the DTRS system? Are there just a few that I need or do I need to figure out which cities I'll be passing through and then look them up and program for each city? Also, I read in a previous post that Colorado uses airplanes to monitor traffic but the post was somewhat confusing and never really gave a list of frequencies used for this and I was unable to find them in the database. Is this something worth listening to? Thanks again for everything.

Not sure what your into, but the National Parks, Fish & Wildlife, are VERY ACTIVE this time of year. You have certainly found the best place to ask!!

Are you traveling across the entire state from Kansas to Utah?

If so DTRS will only be active for you from Burlington to Ike Tunnel then West of that it's VHF only.

What are you interested in State Patrol, Local & County Pd's, Highway Dept, EMS, Forest Service, Severe Weather or what?

Yes, I'll be traveling from Kansas to Utah. I guess I'm mainly interested in law enforcement. So I guess the statewide trunked system is only in the eastern part of the state so far?

My approach has been to program in all the control channels the system has. I put them in order of those closest to me. I've had good results with this and found that the 96 will lock onto the first CC it finds. Thus, if you input all of them, you'll be able to hear the system almost anywhere you're in range of one of the towers. Not all TG's are on all towers though.

Although for just I-70 travel he will only need about 7 control channels.

Bethune(867.9125), Limon(868.1375), Bennett (867.3500), Smoky Hill(868.8750), Thornton(868.9750), Golden(868.7750) and Squaw Mtn(868.8500)

That's true, although I assume you mean Thorodin and not Thornton. As far as I know, Thornton has no control channel. But I could be wrong.

That's correct.

Also BKW should be aware that most of the areas he's going through CSP will be the only police agency on DTRS. The exceptions being Arapahoe and Jefferson Counties.

Correct but none of those are on DTRS and I thought that's what he was inquiring about.

Sorry quess I lost the thread if the original posters main concerns are speed traps then make the radar detector investment and not a scanner. All the scanner will enable him to do is hear his plate being run, after he's been stopped. woo hoo.

No, I really don't care about speed traps. I was just wanting to know what is good to listen to during my drive through Colorado. I mainly just was looking for some of the most active frequencies so I wouldn't spend a bunch of time programming stuff I'll never use. So far I've gotten some great information on how to best track the DTRS system you have there in Colorado. Thank you for all of your help!
