Is my theory right that when there is snow/ice/or other frozen precip. this causes tropospheric ducting-like conditions? I live in the eastern half of Camden County, NJ and I can hear simplex Camden City fire apparatus (from over 12 miles away). For once I don't have to sit by the west facing window to get the PA turnpike operations clearly. I am also hearing other things I don't normally get. I'm enjoying it, because normally I'd kill to hear this stuff, and especially being its a busy day for public safety. But what exactly causes this? Last time we had a freezing rain and this happened, but normally when it is regular rain, this actually weakens signals slightly. Any theories?

Hmm. Interesting reading. I had a theory of my own. Much like what happens when it is foggy outside on a muggy morning, I guess the sleet pellets and snow causes the signals to carry farther, kind of like what happens when radio signals carry far across bodies of water. But just my 2 cents. {:>D

Tropo can happen any time of year, day or night. Warm days leading into cooler nights and you got the right conditions for tropo. In the winter it's not as prevalent as it is in the summer but does occur. It can last all night and into the next daylight cycle and die out by noontime and then reappear the next evening.

Here's a link you may want to save to your bookmarks for a map showing enhanced propagation paths in North America. You can also click the links at the bottom for other parts of the world: http://www.mountainlake.k12.mn.us/ham/aprs/path.cgi?map=na

It's exceptionally great from Feb. to April. Generally from Midnight to 10:00 AM. if you google Tropo Maps, you'll get a wide variety of hits. the one people have used in the past from here, I posted in a new thread in this Specific forum. from what I have experienced its pretty accurate.
