Is my theory right that when there is snow/ice/or other frozen precip. this causes tropospheric ducting-like conditions? I live in the eastern half of Camden County, NJ and I can hear simplex Camden City fire apparatus (from over 12 miles away). For once I don't have to sit by the west facing window to get the PA turnpike operations clearly. I am also hearing other things I don't normally get. I'm enjoying it, because normally I'd kill to hear this stuff, and especially being its a busy day for public safety. But what exactly causes this? Last time we had a freezing rain and this happened, but normally when it is regular rain, this actually weakens signals slightly. Any theories?
