Here, there, everywhere.
What does it mean when I get the following...

03:58:38 RFD Car 7 8277 Af-> 848 RFD Tac-1
03:58:38 Message of type 'S', #1 <from> 848 ?

I know what the initial affiliation message is, but the message of type S thing has popped up a few times and I am clueless.

This is the only time in the 2 days of my experience with Trunker that an S message has appeared directly after someone turned on their radio. (See Car 7).

Also, quickly, I noticed that when the FD or EMS get toned out, the following appears...

03:56:40 Add2MSEL id 4147, group 823(RFD Dispatch)
03:56:51 MSEL id 4147 closed.

Any idea why this pops up with the tones? (Stays open until the call including voice portiion concludes.)

The second is a multi-select. They do a multi-select for the tone-out and then drop it when done.

From Wayne's site on trunking:
"Another form of patching, yet really not a patch, is a MultiSelect [MSEL]. MultiSelect is used by the Dispatcher to broadcast a message to multiple talkgroups but without the need for subscribers to reply. With patching, the patch is up for however long the Dispatcher would like it to be. A MultiSelect only lasts for as long as the Dispatcher makes the call. A MultiSelect announcement may operate in two forms, similar to patching."

So, using that data, does every different tone out have a different MSEL code?

For instance, on that dispatch I posted, Tones were dropped for Engine 11 and Ladder 3. Does MSEL 4147 mean that specific tone out? I have some from earlier yesterday logged, but I didn't have the Fire Truck radio id's fleshed out yet, so they were unknown users.

If my theory above holds up, it would be nice to create a reference file for my city for specific tone outs and apparatus dispatched.

Also, question one is still open for reply, friends!

Thanks for the multiselect definition, our dispatchers on MERA use them to dispatch large scale fire responses over multiple talkgroups and to do APB broadcasts.

I've seen the message of type 'S', a couple times myself and could never figure it out either so if anyone knows please enlighten us. :)

Note sure if the " message of type 'S', #1 <from>... " is the same for all systems, but while monitoring my local system (palmetto 800 system site for Summerville 2b02-012) I've noticed that when the Motorola techs program someone's radio with a DES/ASTRO talk group they have to push the "not", or "zero" (0) key to enable encryption. Every time a Berkeley Country Narc unit Affiliates with their channel, when they press the "zero" key I get the type 'S' message, and they then go encrypted.

A few weeks ago, Motorola requested a local town PD to press the "zero" button when first powering on their unit, so that they could log all current units in a new data base. Now, I'm not sure why they requested that... but, needless to say... for the next 3 shifts, my screen was inundated with the messages from all the pressing that went on. :p

I would love to hear from other people, what has someone else seen?

do you have:
TRACKDIGITAL=1
added to your env variables file? If so, then you'll follow digital or DES/Astro (you won't be able to hear them though)

It looks to me like it isn't Car 7 (RID=8277) which is sending the message, it's an unidentified unit (RID=848). If it were an identified unit sending the message, you should see their identification instead of the question mark.

Have you since identified 848?

A "Status Message" was sent from that radio. Basically a subscriber can push a button on a DEK bar above the radio (or a soft menu) to send out a status message (A total of eight). These buttons are labeled on the radio and at the dispatch center there's a terminal with them aliased also. Often they're tied into a CAD system.

There are also regular Messages, a total of sixteen, for other purposes. Either Status or Message messaging can be used any time on a trunked radio as long as the programming is there for it. If there are no message acks then it was usually sent in error.
