    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Trunking and Mesh - more dumb questions!

HI,

this is probably going to be a silly question, but can anyone summarise what trunking and Mesh technologies are and if they are similar/compatible or completely different things?

I've only just started to look at this and am confused - is Mesh a mobile (cell) phone version of trunking or am I completely off the mark?

please help!

Trunking is the automatic sharring of a group of channels on an as-needed basis.

Mostly used for Voice, in radio mostly used for the last link

Mesh is (Wow, mesh is hard to describe)

Mesh is the use of IP or "IP like" routing to allow a group of autonomous packet access points to create a unified network" (Maybe?)

Mostly used for (packet) data, mostly used for the second to last link.

I would do some more reading on the basics, or find some to explain it on a whiteboard.

Text is a dificult medium. :)

If we start with the basic terms then people can build a reasonabl understanding.



And besides, would VoIP on mesh realy be trunking?

Or is all packet trunking?

I was referring to using VoIP in trunking.. Would Mesh be the method of the VoIP on the trunking? Such as is used on P-25IP?

thanks for the responses though... I'm taking N_Jay's advice and doing a little more background reading... if I manage to answer my own question I'll let you know - if anyone's interested!

What I'm looking at is a current motorola trunking system with a microwave backbone and I guess I was just wondering if the MESH technologies (which I've only just started reading about) were an IP version of trunking sort of systems.

Simply put MESH networks are data networks where wireless clients can act as repeaters to link back to the system, to extend the coverage or to create a network on-site.
AFAIK developed for military use and specifically where you have no existing infrastructure (like on the battlefield). See here for more information: Motorola's Mobile Mesh Networks Technology

The abobe MESH networks are not to be confused with the mesh topology of transmission links that are sometimes used in trunking systems to link base stations and/or switches. Here the mesh does provide link redundancy only.

So MESH would not be the way to set up IP on TRS (VoIP/P-25IP etc). If you had no existing background infrastructure, then youd use the MESH to set up a net, then you could build out from there. I love learning new things. See N_Jay, old dogs can learn new tricks! (Bark bark)

Mesh Networks produced a version for voice use. It was tested by one fire department that I know. The radios connected to each other as they came on the scene and were used for local communications. They worked good. Now motorola has bought Mesh Networks.

In the original story about Mesh Networks it was stated to VOIP could be used to make a city wide system.

I know that motorola has been developing plans for the 4 GHz frequencies that were recently released. I bet mesh will be included in this band and others.
