To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

ETA is estimated time of arrival. You answered that in question 8. I’m curious how the stay time parameter might affect the site selection, but very excited to try this update. It should add the features I have been hoping for.

I would love to help test if you would like another beta tester.

Hello Guys,

Here is the Q&A about the Trunking Free Scan function. I hope these Q&A can solve your questions asked previously.

Thank you!

Trunking Free Scan:

Q1. Does this new function work in TG-Scan or TG Monitor mode?
Ans.
It is the whole new function mode on the pager. The user has to program one knob with "Trunking Free Scan" on the pager. This function supports the pager to save the TGID when scanning. The user can also program the TGID he already knows to the scan list. On the scan list, the user can do the nuisance delete or save TGID he wants to listen.

Q2. Do the nuisance delete is temporary or permanent?
Ans.
The user can do both of the settings in the PPS depends on his demand.
Temporary: Switch knob or power off the pager will reset the nuisance delete list.
Permanent: The user has to go to scan the list setting in the pager or change the setting from the PPS.

Q3. Can it be controlled by the hard key since people won’t always look at the screen?
Ans.
Yes, Unication heard some user’s voice. We are making it be able to work with the hard key (Play Key and PTT).
The detailed information will be released with the beta version.

Q4. Multi-Sites scan support?
Ans.
Yes, the user can choose the multiple sites he wants to scan in the scan list.
Note: It needs to work with the “stay time” parameter setting in the PPS.

Q5. Are these features to be available via a firmware update, or a completely new G-Series model?
Ans.
It will be available via a firmware update.

Q6. ETA on this new feature being added?
Ans.
Sorry, but I can not understand what is ETA. Any information would like to add?

Q7. Will this function affect the great receiving performance the pager has now?
Ans.
It will not affect the performance of the pager. But if the user is scanning A site, but a message comes from B site, it would not be received.

Q8. When does the Trunking Free Scan release?
Ans.
Unication plan to release the beta test version before February.

Will trunked DMR/MotoTrbo scanning be included in this update?

There is a issue bout 1% of the time it happens that the talk group doesn't match on with what's on the screen on the pager. Example PD talking but shows a Fire or Ems talk group something to look in to as well with a newer firm ware.

Overall, this is great news! But how will the "G* is a pager" faction reconcile this? Will the G series now become a "scager", or maybe a "panner"? Stay tuned.

It is the whole new function mode on the pager. The user has to program one knob with "Trunking Free Scan" on the pager. This function supports the pager to save the TGID when scanning. It sounds like the new features will be a new, separate receiving mode. So anyone who doesn't want any of the new features wouldn't select that mode, so no change for them.

I went from a scanner to a G5 and initially really missed the Hold on TG feature. But I’ve been able work around it for over year now. I’m sure I’d use the Hold feature if it were available though. My biggest complaints of my G5 is the prioritized priority scanning and how any radio traffic overrides any other function. The prioritized priority scanning is nice for some settings, but for others all I need is one TG prioritized. It would be nice to have both options. I like to use custom voice prompts for the channel selector knob. But any radio traffic overrides the initiation of the voice prompt, leaving me unsure if I’m on the right knob position. Also, any radio traffic takes you out of any menu option you’re in. For example, if you’re trying to turn Bluetooth on or trying to connect a Bluetooth device and you receive some radio traffic, the pager forces you out of the setting area to show the radio ID screen, which makes you have wait until all radio traffic is clear again to start the Bluetooth connecting process over. Seems like radio traffic could play in the background while a user is in the Settings or Messages tabs. Unication seems to take their not missing a page thing to an extreme, at the expense of functionality.

I am not sure how I am just learning about this major update. Everything I am reading sounds great. Thanks Unication! You're definitely adding value to your products.

Your post is probably too old to be edited. TG hold/delay would be nice but most of all the ability to change zones etc while a transmission is in progress would be nice it's incredibly annoying to not have control of the pager when receiving a transmission.
I second that, using the menu while receiving a transmission active would be very helpful.

Is the hold function the only change on the new firmware. I would like to also see a scan delay added.
And if not an actual delay, an option to hold the display-only of the most recently received talkgroup would be helpful. In other words, the G can continue to scan while displaying the last "group alias" for a predetermined amount of time or until the next transmission. I find that unless I'm staring directly at the G5, some transmissions are so short that I can't id the most recent one when scanning multiple TG's.

I would think that with a color screen it would adversely affect battery life.
It would even be helpful if the display held only until the screen blanks. It's just that now, the displayed TG immediately disappears once the transmitting mic is unkeyed.

Patiently awaiting this firmware release....bought a few G5's, but I don't use them simply because it's too difficult to change the zones.

If you mean because it is impossible to work the buttons while receiving traffic, a workaround is to program one blank channel position and rotate to that if you need to access anything. Not ideal at all, but it may be enough to get you using them again.

Steve,
Thank you for the info you posted! I'm really thankful for the answer to Q3. Earlier I posted about using hardware keys for the hold function. Seems you read my post. If you need help testing the beta version, I'm here.

Yea!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Anderegg. You are on the right track. Your post about TG Hold in TG Scan using a HARDWARE button is exactly the way it should be done. However, I would use the top button (play key) for the hold function. If you monitor an extremely busy system (in my case Atlanta Police with six dispatch channels) you need to be able to quickly access the hold function without removing the pager from your belt and looking at a display or menu. Most police dispatch channel transmissions are five seconds or less in length, especially emergency ones (example: shots fired, shots fired). Using the play key for this will accomplish the quick access. The best solution is to allow the hardware button(s) to be programmable via the PPS. Then, you can designate the play key as "nuis del" and I can use the play key as "hold". As you also point out, implementing scan hold and scan delay at the same time is absolutely essential. On a busy system, without a delay function, the channel you want to hold on will be long gone before you can press a hold button. The delay function should be "selectable" AND programmable in length (example: 0-5 seconds).
