• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Trunking TG-Monitor vs Free Scan

Thoroughly enjoying the new ver 4 PPS! I had been using the Beta Free Scan version since it was released. Thought I'd jump back into the mainstream, especially now since it has Hold and Block (Prior to Beta, I didn't have this). For those of you who are afraid of the learning curve for Vers 4 - I've found it much easier than learning the whole system in the beginning. Not much difference, but it really make sense to just start over, and use your old setup as a template.

So to my question: What is the difference between the receiving modes called "TG-Monitor" and "Free Scan"? This shows up in tab E7.

It is listed in the help file, but doesn't adequately describes it in my opinion.

TG Scan allows only selected TGs to be monitored, TG Monitor allows all TGs to be heard, even if not selected, while Free Scan allows you to scan a range of frequencies for traffic.

Ah, okay, got it. Makes sense. Thanks!

If you are on a Windows machine, try Win + Shift + S keyboard shortcut to use the snipping tool. You can either take a screenshot of the full screen or only capture a part of it. The screenshots will be copied to the clipboard.

Are you sure about this? Because in the help file for V0.4.0.36, "Free Scan" is noted as only being available in P25 Trunking mode. And the description seems almost identical to "Trunking TG-Monitor". Scanning a range of frequencies with P25 Trunking doesn't make any sense to me. Unless it's scanning a range of frequencies for control channel activity?

I'm still confused about what the difference is, unless the help file is wrong.

if in doubt try setting it up and you'll see what it does, please notice what the bottom two lines say. Looks like someone made a mistake. Simply put the difference between the two is like the difference between the search feature and putting a wildcard in a system on your scanner.
