Trunking with Uniden BC796D HELP!

Hello, I am new to trunking however have been a conventional scanner hobbyist for years. I just purchased a new Uniden BC796D and have been dabbling with the Connecticut State police system. I believe it is a Motorola II, APCO-25 system. There are approximately 20 frequencies ranging from 851.3625 to 868.7500 and several talkgroups. I have managed to enter all my frequencies into one bank, and manually entered in the talkgroups. I can hear transmissions but am wondering the how the control channels work. It seems when a transmission is coming over it keeps jumping over to the control channel, which makes the transmission skip. It is not set on priority. Also, I have it programmed for Control Channel only; I noticed that even when just scanning the unit will stop on the control channel and hesitate before continuing to scan. I am having confusion on how to properly configure this. I took the time to alpha tag all my talkgroups and Banktags and my banktag doesn't even show up when there is a transmission, only the talkgroup. What is the proper way to program without the use of control channel only? Can I even do this? Please HELP. The manual isn't much help...
One last question, if I get the Pro250 software will it allow me to enter alpha tags by using my computer keyboard? It is a real pain to use the turn knob to scroll the alphabet, and the supllied Uniden software does not allow for keyboard input.

To answer your last question first, yes. However, I'd suggest ARC250 Basic, not Pro. Pro has a lot of features you probably don't need right now. The Uniden software is pretty lame, I don't know of anyone that uses it.

If you get ARC250, there I (and probably others) can email you a file that is configured for the Conn SP.

The software is Butel: www.butel.nl I use the same. In controller only you just enter one controller per tower and one alt controller if it has one. Some do, some dont. The Butel 250 is still hard to learn if you've not done trunking before, BUT, once you get it, its nice. You will, however,have to download the same bank over and over until you get it right. I put location of tower for 800 freq name. Use text for talk group ID's and banks. For some banks with services mixed I dont use a bank name but use [................] 16 periods for an underline. Lots of things to learn. Good Luck.

The supplied software works just fine for entering text tags, frequencies and everything else on mine.

Maybe I'm just an idiot. I did buy the AOR250 software and it works great; nice layout and features.

Because you have it set as an APCO 25 system. Redo it as a Motorola II system.

It has to listen to the control channel to be able to tell if there are any transmissions going on that you want it to monitor.

Yes, but the proper way to program a Motorola system is CC only. That way, if a new voice channel is added, you'll hear transmissions on that channel. If you program it as non-CC-only, you'll have to keep adding any new voice channels.

BTW, there are 2 (or 3 in 1 case) control channels at each site - primary and secondary. Program them both (all). The system can switch to the secondary.
