Installed a TRX-2 in my car, imported some systems, and used it for a while. Always booted slowly, but once booted it'd start scanning on its own.

A few weeks ago I started with an all fresh configuration and put in exactly the channels I need in a set of scanlists that make sense for me.... but now when I power it on it starts in the main menu, waiting for me to select "scan".

I cannot figure out what setting to change to get it back to the old behavior.

No setting I'm aware of.
Just hit the right arrow key and it will scan.

Try reinstalling the cpu firmware using the standalone installer from whistlergroup.com

Problem is that the old behavior was that it went straight into scan... so my habit is "get in car, press power button to boot it up, drive off" and then 10 minutes later I realize I've just been sitting at that menu not receiving anything.

Whenever you lose power to the scanner, download a new configuration into the scanner, or turn off the scanner while it is in search mode it will do that. Could you possibly be losing power when you turn off the engine?

Yes. It always loses power when I turn off the engine. And that was true when it was automatically entering scan with the initial programming as well.

Hmmm, can't suggest any thing else since I don't have the 2, just the TRX-1.

Only other thing I can think of is that (if it has one) the backup battery isn't charging? Just a guess. Sorry.

What happens if you let the scanner scan and then manually power it off from the on/off button and then power it on again?

I guess that it saves the last state to SD card, or battery backuped memory, when you power it off and fetches that state when it powers up from either on/off button or just if 12v power are applied. If it have saved the wrong state, being in standby in menu mode, it will always use that state until you properly save another state to the SD card.

It has been my experience that vehicle installations ALWAYS present a power access challenge. It is always suggested that voltage be supplied directly from the battery WITH fuse inline. In some cases, the fuse block can be a source of constant voltage. Cigar Lighter terminals are IFFY, at best. Sometimes they do not supply enough current to power the device connected.

Plug it into house power , turn it on and start it scanning. Then press the button and turn it off , wait a few minutes and turn it back on and see if it starts up scanning , if it does it shows that it is a power issue in the vehicle

Do you buy chance have the LOCK on the SD CARD set to LOCK?
Do you power the scanner off with the POWER BUTTON?
THESE THINGS ARE SAVED TO THE SD CARD AND IF IT CAN NOT WRITE TO IT THEN IT DOES NOT KNOW TO SCAN.

This appears to do the trick, so far. Why it believes anyone would want this state saved for next time is beyond me. Scanners are for, well, scanning.

It has a great source of power, but this power line does shut off after the vehicle is turned off to prevent running down the battery. Leaving devices permanently powered is a way to have the vehicle not start when it is needed.
