I have been using my TRX-2 with an external speaker since it was new, last week tried to use it without one and the radio's speaker is dead. Whistler says it needs a new speaker and send it in (out of warranty) for repair. Just wondering if anyone has replaced their own or not. I haven't opened it up yet and it really doesn't make a difference since it out of warranty anyway. I have tried all the typical fixes, unplug and plug speaker in out several times and scanner settings to no avail.

And it wouldn't make any difference if it was in warranty, you can open the equipment and make (correct) repairs as per Federal law.

I looked up the specs for the speaker:

Built-in 77 mm (3") 8 Ohms dynamic speaker

You may be able to order the exact replacement speaker, see this thread about TRX-2 scanner parts wanted:

Hope this helps

I think unless you don't want an external speaker, just plug one in. There's plenty of speakers available on the market. I use speakers out of retired police car from where I worked. Just connect twin lead wire to the speaker and an 1/8" plug for the radio. Works great!

I even use one of these for a dual band ham radio on the radio I have on my desk so it's louder.

Like it was said in one of the above posts... it might be that the external speaker jack didn't return to the closed position when you removed the external speaker's jack from the radio. Insert and remove the speaker jack several times in succession to see if the corrects the problem.

As it was said in the OP, all that was tried.

Opened it up tonight and connected another speaker to the leads and it worked. Guess I'll order one in. Only thing is they used the crap out of green loctite on the speaker screws and nuts.

Well I reached out to Whistler on getting a new speaker, they wanted to argue that it probably wasn't the speaker as they have only seen 2-3 ever needing replaced. I explained my findings and am still awaiting word if they will straight out sell me one or not.

Or...going a step further...I've also experimented with bookshelf-sized stereo speakers (just using one per radio). Maybe not as good as "regularly" sized stereo speakers, but good enough for speech-only applications and certainly a large improvement over several other options.

Whistler finally agreed to send me a new speaker on the premise that I have to solder the wires to the new one, at a cost of 5 dollars plus shipping.

Carefully check surplus 2-way radio speakers. I've opened up a number of Motorolas, and some are labelled for very low impedance. Not sure how much burden that is on scanner audio output.

MFJ's 281 speaker is cheap and sounds good. My ham rigs power them well.

My install includes a couple PSR-600 types, and I find that they don't power an external speaker all that well. The display light would actually dim during peaks in the audio. Found a couple of these on sale a few years ago, and they were fantastic. Very clean, crisp sound for a mobile environment and they do a lot in particular to enhance AM air band audio.

Search around. I got mine for about $30 each on Amazon, about 7 years ago.

Because I use TRX-1's, I don't know if the TRX-2 has speaker jack separate from the headphone jack. If using a headphone jack, be aware that the TRX headphone jacks are TRS, and I don't know if they will like a TS plug. If there's a separate speaker jack, I feel sure it's probably TS.
