hi, new to scanning. have had some cheap rat-shack handhelds before, but i just got a uniden 796D and i'm trying to get every possible disaster/emergency-management channel i can think of for union county and surrounding areas.

here's what i'm thinking so far. please let me know if there are any other agencies/frequencies i should look for. i printed out a ton of pages from the RRdatabase. i don't have all the freq's yet and i don't have info on all of what i listed. i'm not even sure if all of these are available, but this is what my end result should look like.

*police/fire/ems for all municipalities in union county, essex county, middlesex county, hudson county
*mutual aid for same counties
*sheriff's department for same counties
*troop b north
*troop c central
*spen 1-4
*dep
*ch7 news helicopter
*nj transit rail
*newark airport terminals
*port authority ny/nj including airport operations
*ny maritime
*uscg
*nj state oem
*ny state oem
*oem for previously listed nj counties
*ny common/shared (mutual aid)
*ny medevac helicopters
*northstar and southstar helicopters
*pse&g
*water utility
*fbi
*homeland security
*fema

have i missed anything? i basically want to be able to catch vital info on any local disasters either natural or terrorist.

Why aren't you including other news helicopters in your list?
Last I checked CBS's, channel 2, helicopter flies out of Linden Airport and Fox's out of Essex County Airport.

that's a good .pdf file, thanks. i didn't mean to limit myself to just ch 7's chopper. just an oversight on my part. i only put down the one chopper i have the freq for already.

after i get my list together, i hope you guys don't mind if i ask for the freqs i have trouble finding, thanks.

Hi guys,

You sure are coming up with a lot of useless frequencies like ENG services and utilities. They're hardly used on a routine basis and in an emergency nothing will change, they're for dispatch, not chitter chatter. Then consider the fact that news helicopters often hinder police activities and may be grounded during a real poop vs. fan encounter. FYI, I have never heard anything interesting from one, all the commentary is part of the microwave TV signal.

Same thing for the heavy hitters like FEMA, you won't hear anything useful there either so concentrate on your local stuff if you're not running for your life and still have AC mains power.

Don't say it, my whole ham station including lighting has battery backup power but do YOU?

Then there are always the Amateur Radio repeaters and if widespread conditions exist there are always the standard emergency and health and welfare nets on specific frequencies. You'll have to keep up with the FCC announcements for those, they may or may not declare a radio emergency and the frequencies in use vary according to target area and radio propagation conditions.
