Hello all, I was wondering if anyone has had any good experiences with sound quality using either of these two speakers? I'm trying to figure out what would be the best one to purchase.

The BC15 is a non-amplified speaker that usually works well with a desk-type scanner or amateur radio. I have a few of these speakers. Not sure how they might work with a handheld radio, as most have headphone jacks that provide reduced audio in order to protect the operator's ears when using headphones/earbuds.

The BC23a is an amplified speaker that must be powered from an external source. Because it is amplified, I would expect it to be somewhat or significantly louder than the BC15, if that is important to you.

I agree. The amplified speaker is the way to go. I used the BC15 speaker for my SDS & BCD996P2 back in the day, and at least in my truck, they were not nearly loud enough. If you're just using it for your desk, the BC15 is fine. I definitely recommend the amplified speaker for mobile applications, though.

Depending on your application, amplified computer speakers would work as well, and they're fairly inexpensive.

Unless you do the mod on the amplified speaker it has a short delay in audio

So far the BC20 speaker is working good for my setup, the sound seems to be more "bass" boosted compared to my old GE police cruiser speaker which is clear with no "bass"

Uniden audio, in general, has more bass than GRE/RS/Whistler audio.
