I found new batteries and charged up two longtime companions that fell out of favor —my old VX-5 and VX-8.

After a good charge the VX-5 powers up and beeps as it should, but the display is blank. A full reset doesn't fix the problem. Anyone else have (or remember) this issue?

The VX-8 "runs good" but loves to power down without warning. It doesn't seem to be a loose battery connection, but when it happens it's usually because I pressed a key (could be one of several) on the keyboard. Has anyone run into this before?

Thanks for any thoughts!

I own the VX 5 and haven't run across this problem. Maybe the new batteries are not so good in delivering the correct amount of power. Do you happen to have one of those alkaline battery trays for either radio to see if the issue repeats itself?

The random power down happened on my VX-8 many times, just like you described. I sent it back to Yaesu for repair. Not sure what they did, but it was fixed.
