Trying to scan a trunk system

I received a BC 898 T scanner for my birthday and am trying to program it to receive a trunk system here in Birmingham, AL. The system is listed as a Motorola II system in Vestavia Hills. I have gone to bank 2 and entered the six frequencies that are listed as being used in the system. When trying to scan I don't hear anything at all. Is there something else I need to enter or program in?
I have entered the frequencies in a standard scanner and can hear that there is activity on them and that one of the frequencies is obviously the control frequency.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you enter the Control freqy conventionaly and cannot hear the the deisel engine sound noise on it your to far from the system...If you can you have not programmed the system to trunk properly.....Hold the "trunk" button down for two beeps, when you see the banks on top flash choose bank "B" and press "E", then choose type 11 and press "E" then press "search", you should start seeing talk groups.....
