Troopers are signing in this morning and instead of the usual 1 of 3 or 1 of 4 today it's 1 of 6! Haven't heard of that many Troopers assigned to one shift before.

Well, tax day is coming soon and they just want to make sure everyone contributes their share one way or another. Even TPD is in on it, I passed 3 of their Motor units lined up on the side of 31st Street between Garnett and 129th East Avenue this morning.

KOTV has a story about BAPD (Broken Arrow, OK) posing as construction workers in a construction zone running radar out of a backhoe ... too lazy to look it up and post a link but it's pretty fresh

They did a story about a friend of mine on Sapulpa PD dressing up as a construction worker complete with reflective vest and hardhat that was running some radar in zones a few months ago.

If you ever hear traffic on either Turner 2 or Bailey 2, it's usually related to speed traps. So watch your speed!

Yeah, they did a trap yesterday at the 206 eastbound on the Turner @ 15:30. earlier 2 Troopers where trying to get some speeders and not getting much above 85 Mph.

Hmmmm seems if you drive the speed limit you won't have to worry about "speed traps".

Most people stopped for speeding generally don't have any idea that they are speeding until it's too late. Practiced speeders pay attention at all times so as to not get caught....

Radar/Lidar is a tool and can sometime produce false results, I can't count how many times I have heard conversations with "I wonder why it's reading that" or things to that effect. Once you get into one of these situations you will understand why people discuss this as much as they do.

Well I will let the speeders worry about then. I roll along with cruise and don't fret with it.

I have heard many people assume that they have police disguised as construction workers when it comes to Turner Turnpike. If you go through the construction site in Chandler with a radar detector, it will go off for about 10 miles. Everyone of the message boards and cameras in the Smart Workzone System have radars in them. If you look closely at the camera units, you will see the radar actually mounted on the outside of the housing. The message boards have them mounted inside.

If we ever do a meeting again, I will let everyone see how you log into the server to check posted speeds, view cameras, and change the message boards. Very cool stuff.

Quick question: Is Turner traffic mostly on Talk Group 42128? I hardly ever hear traffic on it.
Are their others?

Also, are their talk groups for the Rogers Pk, or is it all handled by Troop B and Vinita? Thanks!

Here are some pics I took today of some of the equipment right before the Chandler exit EB. Explain the setup if you know how it works.

Post some screen-shots of what the server interface looks like.

Pretty simple really. Camera and radar systems that report to a server system through a cellular modem network. Some of the Smart Workzone Systems use radio modems, but we aren't using any of them right now. The cellular systems send a data burst roughly every two minnutes with the average calculated speed and posts it on the server. The cameras are continuous, if you are actually viewing it. If you watch the preview window, it grabs a snapshot each time you log in.

From the interface, we can read any alarm the system puts off. Comm failure, low voltage, voltage failure, etc. If something causes the speeds to drop, especially in the construction zone itself, then the messages boards change over to a new message reflecting what the average speed ahead is and how long of a delay you will encounter.

From the web interface, we can override the messages to reflect whatever we want. If an accident is in the Workzone, we are notified and I change the messages to reflect a lane closure or shutdown of the highway.

The cameras can be rotated 360 degrees and we can zoom in as well. Image is decent, but a bit jumpy. Not good enough to read a tag, but you could get a good physical description of a vehicle and person if need be. It also allows us to check the taper and traffic control devices to see if anything has been damaged.

Oh yeah, the messages can have up to 6 frames, with a frame rate of .5 seconds. That would be pretty fast and they usually only run 1.5 to 2.2 seconds. What you can't see in the screeen shots are the images of the messages changing. When viewing it live, you see the image go through each frame that is programmed in just like you would if you were viewing the actual message board. It will actually show you if a character is out or scrambled.

Now for some pics...
