My experience (in recent years) here in New England is they rent the radios from a local radio shop. No need for STA's since they move all over
Most, again my experience, have been UHF and Simplex, so you need to be right near-by

Best to put a scanner in search move of 451-455, 456-460, 461-466, 466-470
don't rule out simplex on what might be traditionally thought of as a Repeater input

Some of our many New England examples are at

Also as Tom points out, they maybe (YMMV) be using itinerants or FRS or GMRS or... You need to search
many of the Television and Movie production (VHF) channels have long been absorbed into business band and are not exclusive to TV/Movies

I remember seeing rental radio orders at Bearcom for film production companies, so I'm sure that's what they are doing. Some of the orders, the companies actually had licensed frequencies, while others just wanted Business/Itinerant frequencies programmed in.

You will have to look at all the licenses on the FCC web site and see if any have nationwide areas of operation. Then again what some radio rental company is licensed for and what they atcutally program in customers radios could be different.

usually the radio will also have a channel plan - taped to the front (Ch/Alpha/Use) grab a picture next time, as it will help to ID what you are generally listening to...

They have colored stickers on the front with hand written description that is so hard to read its not worth trying, at least the radio this trooper had. I'll be back this week. They are filming the more exciting portions of this movie this mon/tue/wed weather permitting. I did ask and they said they are all on one channel. Shouldnt be too hard to scan and find.

this is impressive. They are using turbine jet engines on set. The director seems nice but strict. They are taking a break from 1pm to 2pm. Radio traffic is very heavy. Im recording as much as I can

I've not seen any production use 1 frequency, since the 80/90s which was the re-enactment series "Rescue 911" with William Shatner

Everyone now is atleast 16 channels,

I think the heat and long days are getting to them. Their radio traffic isn't too nice. These are also traveling Hollywood people soooo 👀
