Two new Port of Los Angeles Radio Systems

On yesterday's agenda for the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Commissioners was a resolution to approve an $804k contract with Dailey-Wells Communications, Inc for a new radio system for the Port's non-sworn security officers and civilian staff.

Assuming it passed, it looks like it will be a subsystem to the city's EDACS trunked network, but with at least one new radio site specifically to cover the entire Port area and "supporting four channels" (talk groups?).

Farther down the pages it mentions that the total budget will be "$1,685,000, which includes the proposed agreement, other external costs and internal labor costs." Just over double the contract price.

There is a several-paragraph section mentioning that a separate new P25 Tactical Radio System proposal will be requested at a future meeting for the sworn Port Police, obviously on UHF, as it will be compatible with both LAPD and LA-RICS. No dollar amounts were mentioned. Stay tuned.

A question arose about why the need for two systems, EDACS and then the upcoming $5-million UHF (LAPD/LA-RICS Compatible) system, to which the speaker said that a lot of the Port's EDACS system communications will be unrelated to public safety, so not eligible to use Police radio frequencies.

Thanks, LAflyer. I had done a quick FCC search and hadn't found that one. So it is 4 "channels," and however many talkgroups they want to use.

I was curious about who the knowledgeable gentleman was who presented the radio information and answered the board's questions, whether he was a Port employee or just a shill from the contractor. He's the Port's CIO, with a background in IT and infrastructure at both LAWA and LADWP
