I thought it was the SSE5000.

I would agree. Moto made them just for NYPD. I even have a few PDFs about that radio. I wish I could get one, looks like a slick HT :)

does anyone know what FDNY uses as thier radios>? i know that on 9-11 they had very bad reception in the towers when they were rescuing people so then dispatch / IC could not get info to the men inside the building. Anyone know why this happened that they did not get good reception inside the towers?

Landon,

Read completely through http://govinfo.library.unt.edu/911/report/911Report_Ch9.htm The answer to your specific question can be found approx. half way down in the paragraph with the bold caption "The Repeater System."

Currently the...

800,

FDNY Fire units are using Motorola XTS3500R portables (Model I for firefighters and first line supervisors; Model III for Chiefs and above). Mobiles are Motorola Astro Sabers. Post radios are UHF Kenwood TK8150 mobiles.

I'm working on confirming that FDNY*EMS units are using Astro Sabers portables and mobiles.

I was in Coney Island (B'klyn) last weekend and I saw NYPD using Vertex portables. FDNY and EMS were using Motorola XTS series radios.

Oh, I was of the impression they were standard issue.

I wish they made them available to everyone. They look like a neat design.
