Since N. TX is not far away from APCO25 guess it is time for the 396T!

Question for someone who has already programmed the new frequencies...are you inputting the entire system for the state, and then programming NAC codes for your area? I travel the state A LOT and hoping that just one file with the entire statewide system, would work for me. Yea, I might hear other stations while in Houston, but out in far W. TX or the Valley figure I will only hear those dispatchers.

Any help will be appreciated as I start to pour thru the manual and notes here on RR on programming...

tnx...cleve

I've just programmed the State channel plan and it works quite well. Scanners do not let us program or use the NAC codes yet. I have a Pro96 and will not purchasing another scanner until the NAC codes are supported.

There is a listing of two frequencies in the Austin Texas DPS section that state they are APCO 25. I have no way of knowing for sure that they are really broadcasting APCO 25 transmissions. Maybe one of the more experienced users could say what to look for.

nothing is APCO 25 in Austin yet, except Capitol Police UHF repeaters, and they have been forever now. They plan to have two base stations, A1 and A2, dispatching troopers when the change is finalized. There is also a repeater going up in Matagorda County according to the maps.

I was not aware we could not program in NAC codes!!! So as always if there is high band skip, then I could be hearing any of the base stations on the A1, A2/B1, B2!!!

Oh well, it is always something.

I am guessing then programming both the P-25 frequencies and the analog is a good idea for a while longer.

THANKS...cleve

I have experienced bleed-over problems from 155.460 with 155.4625 when I am in Bryan. I only really use A2 when I'm in Houston, so I end up having to lock it out when I am home.

Would someone please explain what advantage APCO 25 would give DPS using conventional frequencies and how would you know as a scanner listener that you are hearing a Conventional APCO 25 system.

Thank You

A. Everybody has to go digital by 2013
B. Virtually all new equipment today from major manufacturers is P25
C. Rolling out a statewide system takes several to many years (see A)

If you're "hearing" a digital signal on an analog receiver, the audio will be at best unintelligible.

The 2013 deadline is moreover a deadline for all equipment to be narrowband only, with no wideband capability. Use of analog transmissions will still be allowed, but it will be slightly worse in audio quality as analog sounds much clearer the wider the bandwidth is. This is where digital (P25) jumps in because it uses much less bandwidth and provides a crystal clear signal within it's coverage area, static-free, and it also allows data, text-messaging, radio ID's and so on to be relayed along with voice. No more MDC nails on chalkboard radio identification.

Anybody listening to the SATX area on a digital capable scanner?

What are there thoughts/opinions? DPS coming in good? Just bought a PRO96 for use in MD while I am away and wondering how well it will do when I am back home.

I pick un San Antonio in Austin on a rubber duckie crystal clear on 159.21 P25. Pretty funny, because I can't hear Austin as well and I'm in Austin (yes, I know DPS is IMBE and Austin CQPSK - it still sucks.)

Austin is IMBE also. IMBE is the vocoder type. The CQPSK is the waveform. DPS is C4FM (I think).

Yeah, I understand the difference - got my acronyms mixed up. The point is I can hear DPS from San Antonio better in Austin than I can hear Austin PD in Austin.

A. According to who?
B. While many manufacturers are building P25 equipment, I think you are over stating a little.
C. Very True!

A. The FCC. Narrowbanding is mandated by 2013; at the moment, the only equipment and methodology I'm aware of that vendors are using to achieve that is digital.
B. I did overstate some. Essentially the only new equipment being manufactured by the higher end, public safety type folks for public safety applications is P25 capable (sometimes requiring a software/flash upgrade.) There are exceptions, but this is generally quite true.
