Yes, it IS "early" and I'm up, :-(

But not by choice. I was searching the F.C.C. database in Angelina county, when I ran across the
WPAH 455, DPS station in Lufkin. The "frequencies", apparently are "bassackwards" in the ssb HF
spectrum. There is a funny 'notation' but I can't seem to find the explanation. Anyone know about
what goes on down there? My "guess" is that those frequencies are "abandoned" but the agency
hasn't turned in the license.

DOT or DPS?

Used by TXDOT

Well, I have an "understanding problem" with my dementia. Is the DOT..Department of Transportation, the road building/maintenance crews or the cops?

I think the DPS - Department of Public Safety is the Highway Patrol. Although I can't imagine just WHY either one would still actively use HF ssb mode to communicate state-wide these days with the I-Net to send e-mail.

I've seen pictures in the 1920's and 30's of police cars equipped with 4 tall post and what appeared to be a horizontal winding of wire on top of the sedan for the 1.7 mcs to 2.0 mc AM police transceivers, LOL! My late aunt, had a large, console radio that had longwave, Broadcast band AM, the "police" band and others up to 8 mcs, LOL!

Thanks for the help, Gentlemen.

TXDOT, as known by Texans, is the Texas Dept. of Transportation. They build and maintain highways across the state.

THEY DON'T. It is called "Operation SECURE" (State Emergency Communications Using Radio Effectively)

It can only be used during an emergency. NOT for routine traffic.
Most states have it.
I'm not sure if it is still used in Texas.
The DPS office here doesn't even have an HF antenna, although some of the other DPS offices have or used to have trap dipoles.
I have never seen one at a TXDOT facility.

Morning Tom, All,

It seems a shame that agencies, all over the U.S. have abandoned lower frequencies, yet still keep the license "active" in the F.C.C. database. It's my understanding that most Texas agencies have stopped using low-band VHF (37 - 47 mhz). Louisiana has all but abandoned 39 mhz in favor of hi-band vhf, lo-band UHF (450-512 mhz) and 800 mhz trunked. And now, because some greedy cell 'phone company wants 800 mhz to themselves, they're paying to move everyone to 700 mhz. No wonder my infrequent cell 'phone bill is HIGH, even buying those card 'minutes'. I have to buy $20 worth of minutes every 90 days, whither I need them or not, or lose phone service, despite the fact I have minutes ON my 'phone. I don't even talk on the "twisted pair" all that much, LOL!

Blessings,
