I am wanting to purchase a scanner to listen to the Tipton County Tennessee Sheriff's department. When researching scanners I see that they monitor different types of signals (APCO 25 Pahase 1 & 2, X2-TDMA, Motorola, EDACS, and LTR Trunked). Can someone tell me if I purchase a scanner that monitors these types will I be able to pick up the Tipton County Tennessee Sheriff's office? I'm just wanting to make sure that I can hear my local police/fire. I have found the frequencies on the Radio Reference pages but don't know the type of broadcast it is. Thank you for helping a newbie!

You can get a scanner that covers all the different types of signals and modulations but if you police department switched to encryption you will not hear it at all, there are no scanners on the market that can decrypt today's encryption schemes.

With that being said i would buy a top of the lime scanner anyway

Hi dgmccain
Welcome to RadioReference

Looking at Tipton County in the database, it appears that the Sheriff's Dept. is using this trunked system:
https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?sid=8343

That's a DMR system. There are a number of scanners capable of monitoring this system type. All of them are capable of monitoring the other system types you mention (APCO 25 Pahase 1 & 2, X2-TDMA, Motorola, EDACS, and LTR Trunked). Unfortunately, it appears that all of the talkgroups on the system are tagged as being encrypted. You would only be able to monitor anything that was not encrypted. Looking at the number of conventional channels for your county, versus the small number (six) of identified talkgroups, there may be other usage on the system. Whether or not any of it was also encrypted, I would not know.

Current Model Whistler:
All of the scanners in this group can receive P25 Phase I & P25 Phase II signals. These also can utilize a free upgrade for receiving DMR systems.

WS1088 (Handheld) Has keypad.
WS1098 (Base/Mobile) Has keypad and a detachable head for mobile installations.

TRX-1 (Handheld) Has keypad.
TRX-2 (Base/Mobile) Has keypad and a detachable head for mobile installations.
The TRX-1 & TRX-2 also have an available free upgrade to enable reception of NXDN systems.

Previous Whistler Models that are also P25 Phase I & P25 Phase II capable, also have a free DMR upgrade:
WS1080 (Handheld) (Same as the WS1088, except lacking the numeric keypad)
WS1095 (Base/Mobile) (Same as the WS1098, except lacking the numeric keypad)

Current Model Uniden:
Note that ALL of the scanners below will receive P25 Phase I & P25 Phase II signals. All can utilize paid upgrades to receive DMR systems or ProVoice.

Uniden BCD436HP (Handheld)
Uniden BCD536HP (Base/Mobile)
Uniden BCD325P2 (Handheld)
Uniden BCD996P2 (Base Mobile)

The scanners below have a paid upgrade available through Whistler, to make them DMR capable, as well as P25 Phase I & Phase II (all except the Pro-18 were already Phase II capable). This upgrade also makes them eligible for support from Whistler. All are discontinued units. Also see this RadioReference thread.

GRE PSR-800 (Handheld)
RadioShack PRO-18 (Handheld)
Radio Shack Pro-668 (Handheld)

I see that the electric company in your county is also on a DMR system. The statewide system, TACN, is a P25 Phase II, though a number of talkgroups are shown as Phase I. The scanners above can monitor this system, excepting some of the talkgroups that are encrypted.
