• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is there a way to tell if my MD 2017 has GPS or not? CPS software says yes but there is no entry in Utilities in radio itself. Firmware version D003.031 CP Ver V01.16
Thanks

1. If you bought it new, one of the stickers on the box has a GPS checkbox that should be checked if the GPS is present.

2. Remove the battery; there should be an orange sticker that says GPS.

3. If you are on a digital channel, there should be a menu entry in the main menu (not the Utilities section) for GPS/BeiDou. This entry does not appear for analog channels.

4. I don't know if it is possible to load the wrong firmware -- GPS fw on a non-GPS radio, but it might be. Current versions are fw 4.05 and cps 1.22. You might try loading more recent fw, or reloading what you have, with the GPS version.

Edit: FYI, I found this article on how to set up GPS and APRS on Brandmeister. It is for the MD-380, but the procedure for the MD-2017 is pretty much the same. It works.

Thanks

Thank you good doctor.
I have the box, somewhere.
No menu item when on digital channel.
No orange sticker.
So no GPS
Saw a mod to dump recording and get 100,000 contacts but it seemed you needed to know if it was a gps or non gps model.

Yep, no GPS. You don't need a "mod" for the 100K contacts, the latest official firmware has that capability. There are four versions of the firmware - with the choice between recording or 100K contacts, and with or without gps.

Also be aware that DMR-MARC is no longer maintaining the userid database -- that is now coming from ham-digital.org

The format is a little different, with less information, presumably to comply with new EU privacy rules. It will take a while for software providers to switch to the new url and format, but you can still do all of this manually with a spreadsheet. You might also want to look into the Retevis UserDB (the RT82 and MD2017 are essentially the same radio) manager at

RT82 Resources

for loading the contacts into the radio (you will have to use the file load method), or else use Contact Manager, which has now been modified to handle the ham-digital database.

Hope this is helpful.

Did not know about the move of the user id database. I have started using Contact Manager and just updated it.
