Hello!

I recently acquired the chinese TYT UV3R and am enjoying the radio. I switched the stock antenna for a Diamond SRH519 whip. Often, when I get in the car I will unscrew the rubber duck or the whip and switch over to my mag mount.

Unfortunately I must have screwed it on a little too tight. The sma connector base actually unscrewed from the chassis itself. The base of the element is copper and I can see silver discoloration where it appears to have been soldered to the radio. It is easy enough to screw the sma base back onto the radio and I seem to be getting a good RX signal. TX works on close range simplex but I am not hitting local repeaters very well.

After taking the radio apart, I cannot figure out how one would resolder the connection as the sma antenna base screws in through a hole in the chassis but the solder point is completely inaccessible.

Anyone have experience with this?

I'm sorry that it broke off the way it did. I don't think these Chinese radios are very user fixable unless you're a radio tech and have the proper equipment to do these type of repairs. I also see these TYT UV 3R's are only 2.5 watts on HI power, not even a full 5 watt as most of the others are. You can also pick them up for about $50 on Ebay brand new.

Personally if you can't see any way to get in there to solder it, then I would just toss it and count it as a loss. Fortunately it was not a $400 radio. I've seen several Chinese radios taken apart on Youtube for modifications, and normally your SMA antenna base is right onto the circuit board and its in the open, I don't know how TYT assembled theirs.

Maybe you don't have it completely disassembled? The SMA is normally fully exposed from the ones I've seen.

Maybe someone else on here has an idea on how to get it back in there. Good luck,
