Anyone know if com's from this can be scanned? Also could be cool to see.

WASHINGTON - The anticipated landing of the space shuttle Atlantis will open the window of opportunity for the U.S. military to shoot down a dying intelligence satellite headed toward Earth, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said.

President Bush has authorized Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates to give the shoot-down order, and the secretary received a briefing on the plan, Morrell said. The secretary is prepared to make that call from the road, if necessary, during his nine-day, around-the-world trip, he said.

Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters last week the window of opportunity for shooting down the satellite would last seven or eight days.

"We have a pretty wide aperture with which to take this shot," Morrell said. "I think the commanders that are evaluating this are looking at all the conditions that could impact this to make sure that when we do take this shot, it can be as successful as possible."

Cartwright, Air Force Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, commander of U.S. Strategic Command, and other experts across the military and U.S. government "are evaluating the situation and will advise the secretary when they have a shot to take," Morrell said.

Pentagon officials began studying the situation in early January when it become clear that a malfunctioning U.S. spy satellite could cause death or injury if it fell in a populated area. Of particular concern is that the satellite could release hydrazine, a toxic chemical used as a maneuvering fuel.

A Pentagon plan was put together to strike the incoming satellite just above the atmosphere, rupturing the hydrazine tank in the process.

All systems appear to be "go" for the launch order. The Navy has prepared for the mission by modifying three SM-3 missiles aboard Aegis ships to strike the satellite, Cartwright said last week.

The international community has been informed of the mission and why it's being conducted, Morrell said. "So I think everybody is up to date on what our thinking is and what our course of action is going to be, and we will keep them apprised of how it develops over the coming days," he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a 24-hour notice warning aircraft and ships to steer clear of the projected shoot-down zone in the Pacific. New warnings will be issued every 24 hours during the anticipated shoot-down window, Morrell said.

The Pentagon will issue a written statement within an hour of the launch and will hold a news conference regarding the effort within the following hours, Morrell told reporters. "We can probably tell you at that point whether or not there has been an intercept," but not necessarily if it destroyed the fuel tank, he said. "That may require some additional time," he acknowledged.

Cartwright and other commanders associated with the mission "have a high confidence this engagement will indeed be successful, and I think Secretary Gates shares that confidence," Morrell told reporters.

Morrell emphasized that the mission isn't designed to test U.S. anti-satellite capabilities. "We did that in 1985. Been there, done that," he said.

"This operation is designed to alleviate a threat to human beings on this planet. There is a large tank of hydrazine fuel onboard that satellite that would pose a significant threat to people within the immediate vicinity of it if it were to hit land," Morrell said. "So not wishing to take that risk, the president has asked -- ordered -- this department to shoot down that satellite.

"And that is what we are now evaluating," he continued, "and that is what the secretary will decide to do, based upon the advice of the commanders."

I would expect the coms to be by satellite and encrypted.

The tracking would all be by RADAR, so all there would be to see would be a fireball.

It certainly would not be easy, but it can be done.

We're Now Into The Window

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon says the window of opportunity is now open for it to try to shoot down a failing spy satellite.

The Navy is planning to hit the satellite with a heat-seeking missile as early as Wednesday night. But officials were waiting for the space shuttle Atlantis to return to Earth so it would not be hit by falling debris.

"We're now into the window," a senior defense official told a Pentagon press conference after the shuttle landed.

The attempted shootdown was approved by President Bush out of concern that toxic fuel on board the satellite could crash to earth.

Sounds like the ship designated to shoot will be located south of Hawaii quite a ways. So doubt it will be visible in California. Also the time of the shoot sounded like later in the afternoon (Hawaii Time, I presume), so a little after dark California time.

But, if you are out watching the lunar eclipse, and you see pieces going by....

WASHINGTON - The Pentagon says bad weather at sea appears likely to put off, until at least Thursday, an attempt to shoot down the wayward U.S. spy satellite.

To correct a few things...

1) It's not a 'dying' satellite - it's completely dead.

2) Since it's dead, you won't hear any comms from it.

3) Even if it was alive - you still wouldn't :)

They will probably miss like everything else our military shoots at.

Randy

You might want to check with the Taliban and Al Qaeda on that. I think they have tens of thousands of "members" that WEREN'T missed when our military shot at them. They're currently enjoying their virgins. In other words: dead.

And haven't the last NINE missle defense (aka: missle shield) tests been successful?

Always amazed to see a meaningless, un-called for and idiotic jab at the defenders of our freedom taken by some whenever the opportunity arises...

Just got a MDT message L.A. Co Fire is gearing up just in case it craters somewhere here. I can think of a few gangsta neighborhoods it can oblitcherate without a lot of weeping afterward. <cough> Willowbrook, El Monte, Pomona.

Is it really a rogue satellite or a message to Putin and the rest of the Ivans to stand down. Hmmm?????

They are now saying this could happen tonight. The Pentagon says they are going to give the media a 1 hour heads up on conditions looking like a go but conditions can change at any time. My guess is that some PD's/FD's will put some kind of info out to units on the radio when it's about to happen. I am also tracking "satellite" on my www.twitter.com

One of the stories a few days ago mentioned that they changed something "through software" to make the satellite easier to track. They didn't say what was using the software but it made it sound as if they may be able to talk to it a bit. I suppose it would make sense if they modded the missile to track RF and they made the satellite transmit something unique that it could home in on.

This Just In

Well as I was pressing submit off went the twitters.

The U.S. government issued a formal notice warning ships and planes to stay clear of a large area of the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii.

The notice says the two- and-a-half hour window begins 2:30 a.m. Thursday Greenwich Mean Time, which is 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on the East Coast, and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Hawaii.

The timing is also after the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to be safely on the ground.

Pentagon officials caution that the notice reflects the first opportunity to take a shot at the satellite, but it's possible the attempt could be delayed until later.

They change the missile's guidance software. The satellite is dead, they never had any communications with it.
