"In theory you could just turn on the entire database
and as long as your “Location” was on, it should only pick up what is set within its “Range”

Obviously, it is the repeater sites that have to be in range, not the mobiles.
The scanner, or Sentinel is not going to know if the unit is 5 or 50 miles away.
So, if I just turn on the entire database, and set the range for any SL Simul site,
can you imagine the information overload?
Try this: Program one wildcard on any Wasatch Front site!

You're right, information overload. But for instance on the SDS 100, you can (with the entire database turned on or off) Select Service Types to listen to.
Aircraft, EMS, Fire, Law ect. ..... 31 Systems in total, plus Custom ones. So you could take that "information overload" and pair it down to what you'd actually like to listen to.

BUT, that is the beauty of Sentinel. Simple and Quick. Program a Favorites List with what you want, and you're done.

Not sure exactly what you mean. SDS can do an ID Search on any System to identify new "Wildcards"
They could easily be entered into Scanner/Sentinel at that point.
