UCAN gets TA approval of planning funding

Feb 14, 2006 6:02 PM
By Donny Jackson

Sprint Nextel today announced that the Transition Administrator has approved the company’s planning funding agreement with the Utah Communications Agency Network (UCAN), one of the largest and more complex systems to be part of 800 MHz rebanding.
TA Director Brett Haan said the UCAN deal represents the first planning-funding agreement with a “significant” public-safety entity, although a handful of other planning-funding deals have been approved. Officials anticipate a complete frequency relocation agreement will be signed by June 30, 2006.

Also is there a list of compatible scanners and if there is any equipment or software updates that will be out to resolve the issue.

I didn't see this mentioned anywhere in the article. I don't think it's good to pass judgement yet as scannists are freaked out as it is (as seen above).

For the rest of you who don't know what rebanding is or how it will impact your scanner I'd suggest you search the forums. It's been covered many times.

I will probably have to do that, but being limited on my time each day, I was hoping that someone would SIMPLY ANSWER THE QUESTION.

Please spare me, it only takes a few minutes.

The simplest answer about what rebanding is: The shifting of the 800MHz public safety band (866-869MHz) 15MHz down. The former PS band will be given to Sprint Nextel. All non-PS users in the 851-854 section will be relocated out.

How will this affect scanner users explained: Motorola trunked systems use specific codes to represent frequencies in the 800 band (which cannot be modified via programming). Once rebanding happens these freq codes will be changed (in the commercial gear) to represent new frequencies. Since you can't change the firmware of most scanners you can't change this information.

If someone wants more information, SEARCH. It's there for a reason.

It is a very complicated thing in a sense. There are many forums, articles about it. Some scanners may be able to be upgraded. Right now its really up in the air how it will effect the scanning community. Hopefully we have some time to wait.
