Hi, New member here. I am looking to get an antenna that will allow me to better grab UHF signals. I live about 60 miles north of Tampa, FL and I am able to hear Tampa PD on my old radio Shack Pro 70 handheld. I use a Watson 881 Super Gainer on the Pro70. I also have a Pro 2053 triple trunk tracker that I want to use for this. The 2053 has the stock antenna and works great for local trunking but does not get the signals from Tampa. I am looking for an indoor unit. We don't want anything on the roof due to the frequent lightning and the hurricanes. Tampa PD frequencies are between 450.000-470.000 mhz Thanks. Steve

Many people on this site like the Scantenna http://www.grove-ent.com/ANT7.html Many can be found for around $50 online or on ebay. A nice bonus is that it comes with 50 ft of RG6 cable. However it is about 7 1/2 ft tall and if you don't have the space you're out of luck.

If you need something shorter I suggest the Centerfire VHF/UHF antenna http://www.centerfireantenna.com/scan2.html The antenna is very similar to the well-liked Radio Shack 20-176, but seems to be built a little better. For this you'll have to get your own coax and adapters.

Digital or Non-digital?

That freq range is very common to digital stuff, UHF doesn't usually need too much antenna in the sky.
As stated many times over in this forum postion is everything. I'm suggesting you find someone local ie. the forums by state and ask around for info. Go to the nearest Ham radio club or store and ask questions specific to what you want to hear. You might get lucky and find a friend that will lend you an antenna for testing before you buy. That also was a policy at Radioshack (not sure if current) but you could take it home and try it out for a day or so and still bring it back for a refund.

If military Air is your interest, as is mine, you'd be surprised what you can find on Ebay in the way of Military antennas. Then you just the need the adaptors.

You'd be surprised what I can hear from this little antenna here (Pic Posted). It's in the attic and simply bolted to an old washer machine panel.

Good luck on your setup, Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the replies and links. The Tampa PD is not digital. The scanner I pick them up on is an old uhf/vhf Hi/Lo. The radioshack Pro 70 Hyperscan.
