I live in an average suburban area that is somewhat hilly. Is the best choice a 3 db gain antenna, or should I save money and just go with a quarterwave? I like the looks of the EM Wave EM-M10003, Electro-Magwave Incorporated. Anybody have an opinion of this antenna? Thanks!

I hate to say this (not attacking), but that antenna looks just like the Antenna Specialists model from two generations ago. Antenna Specialists later improved on the design and closed in the spring (one generation ago). Now for this generation, Antenna Specialists is now PCTEL, and the shape appears to have changed a little. You can see those at: Mosaic Vibration Resistant Collinear Antennas PCTEL Inc

I prefer my 1/4 wave antenna myself....It seems to perform best in my case.
The cut-outs with weak signals don't seem to be as severe as a when I use a gain antenna.
The 1/4 wave also clears my garage door when I park inside.
It's probably more important that you choose a mount that will support multiple antennas.
The mount on my truck is an NMO centered on the cab.
I have 3 different antennas that I can use on this mount.
By picking your mount first, you can try different antennas as your budget allows.

It really depends on you application. If you are ONLY doing GMRS stuff, think about your use of repeated vs simplex channels. How hilly is your area? Having a simple quarter wave antenex QWB450 would work fine, if you are going for some more range and in relatively flat areas, try a phantom type antenna ETRA450 type of antenna. If you are doing ham stuff and GMRS stuff, look for something that is wider band like MWU4002S from PCTEL (what I am ordering).
