I am considering purchasing another TRX and dedicating it to searches and mainly UHF listening. Does anyone know if reception would be better with a tuned portable antenna?

Where would you even get such a thing? All the popular tuned antennas are functionally very poor. I did some tests a year or two ago -
In real terms, if you know where you want to listen - cut a ¼ wave to the centre band, and use that - it'll perform better than all the clever ones, some of which really are dreadful!
