The police Airwave TETRA system is very secure and there are no scanners that will allow you to listen to it. Eventually the Brigade and Ambulance comms will probably move to the same system.

The mobile phone system is also digital and secure.

There is no hobby equipment available that will allow you to listen to Airwave or GSM phones.

Hi, does anyone know if the TETRA system is the same as the american system? as the Police In Surrey U. K use motorola MTH800, the specs for the digital scanners seem to follow this trunked system, and it would seem very similar.

regards,

dave

If by "american system" you mean APCO-25 it is not the same. Actually I am not aware that TETRA is used in America at all, thought it might be / could be (assuming it is permitted by the authorities).
TETRA is based on an open standard by ETSI, supported by Nokia *), Motorola and many other companies. TETRA is often confused with TETRAPOL because of the similar names.
The Airwave network is built by Motorola though I believe that several makes of terminals (radios) are used in the network, probably depending on the county/district. Anyhow, it is not possible to scan a TETRA network, in particular if the system uses Air-Interface Encryption (AIE).

*) You might be interested to learn that EADS is about to buy the Nokia PMR business. Interestingly EADS also sells TETRAPOL networks.
