A (strong) magnetic base.

Ok, but what type of object, containing ferrous metal was the (strong) magnetic base on the bottom of the antenna, connected to? The housing of an outdoor air/con compressor?

A magnetic disk, double-sided taped onto a wooden railing. The antenna sat on top of that disk to hold it in place. I was trying different locations for the antenna to find the best place.

As soon as I lifted it off that disk, it started receiving.

It's not a ground plane (nor did I intended it to be one).

The antenna was working even after I let it go. But never if I put back on the mag disk.

Was the railing level or sitting at an angle? In general, mag mounts need a ground plane for reception (and transmission).

Railing was level.

I found out about this yesterday. I had been thinking that a ground plane would be beneficial for reception/transmission but not necessary. Turns out, it's quite necessary.
